ARTISTIC PROCESS

The hilarious, messy and often slightly insane process of my art making is very bird like. It is as if I am gathering materials for my nest. Piles of lichen, branches, leaves, and roots abound in my backyard and in my studio until I move them around to create some kind of order from the chaos. Often moving materials seems to be a big part of my process. I like to create barefoot, outside, with music on or a podcast. Sometimes I like to work into the night until there isn't enough light left outside to work. I adhere an interesting composition of textures and forms onto the wooden support. Then I paint over my materials and often will add varnish or acrylic medium to strengthen them. After that I will add about three layers of acrylic, sometimes adding some oil pastel for contrast. The final layer will be the layer where I highlight the detailed and specific patterns within my painting and often will fine tune the color and create more contrast.
